White Ribbon Day 2023: #ChangeTheStory

Ending violence against women starts when we #ChangeTheStory

On White Ribbon Day, 25th November, and throughout the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, we are encouraging individuals and organisations to #ChangeTheStory for women and girls. How? By making consistent choices and actions so they may live their lives free from the fear of men’s violence.

It has been one year since the Istanbul Convention (an international human rights treaty opposing violence against women) became law in the UK. This treaty calls for cultural and social change to address ways of thinking and being that endanger the lives of women. Men and boys play a key role in affecting such change, which is why we’re focusing on what they can do to #ChangeTheStory.

Culture change doesn’t happen overnight. We can end violence against women and girls by recognising what violence is, and knowing how to challenge and disrupt harmful attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate gender-based violence.

Violence experienced by women and girls takes many forms. Some behaviours and words may seem ‘harmless’ but normalising them ignores the effects these have on women, and can lead to more extreme violence.

Being allies with women every day shouldn’t be underestimated, even the smallest actions can affect big change. It’s up to all of us, especially men and boys, to #ChangeTheStory and end violence against women in our society.

How can you #ChangeTheStory?

  • Fundraise for White Ribbon UK: You can buy a fundraising pack as well as other awareness-raising materials on the Shop.

  • Become a White Ribbon Accredited organisation: Every year, organisations and companies of all sizes, from various sectors, become White Ribbon Accredited in time for White Ribbon Day to show their commitment to preventing violence. If your organisation has less than 250 staff, you may instead choose to become a White Ribbon Supporter Organisation.

  • Organise a fundraising activity: You can buy a fundraising pack as well as other awareness-raising materials on the Shop to host a fundraiser for your organisation, school, or to do yourself.

  • Attend one of the online events that White Ribbon UK will host around White Ribbon Day this year. We’ll provide you with strategies to #ChangeTheStory in your workplace and community. More information about these webinars will be available soon — visit the #ChangeTheStory page regularly for updates.

  • If you’re looking to take on a personal responsibility to make consistent and positive change, consider becoming a White Ribbon Ambassador or Champion.

Stay tuned: All White Ribbon Day resources will be available on the website very soon!
