The Importance of the Primary Prevention of Violence Against Women
The Prevalence of Violence Against Women in the Night-Time Economy
45% of women feel very or fairly unsafe in busy public spaces after dark. (ONS, 2022)
35% of women have either had a drink spiked themselves or know someone who has, or both. (YouGov, 2022)
79% of women say they expect inappropriate comments, touching or behaviour to take place when they go on a night out, either to themselves, or their female friends. (Drink Aware, 2017)
63% of men agree that men in society aren’t doing enough to ensure the safety of women and girls. (YouGov, 2021)
The Importance of the Primary Prevention of Violence Against Women
To end and prevent men's violence against women and girls, we must work to address and dispel the harmful attitudes and behaviours surrounding gender norms and harmful masculinity that cause it.
Violence against women and girls is not just a women's issue, it negatively impacts everyone in society and prevents all of us, especially women and girls, from leading full lives free from violence.
White Ribbon is the UK's leading charity engaging men and boys to prevent violence against women and girls. We take a whole society approach working individuals and organisations across England and Wales to foster positive culture change to prevent violence before it can start, and campaign for legislative and policy change across local and national governments, including in Westminster and Cardiff.
Prioritise Primary Prevention Work
Include the primary prevention of violence against women and girls within policy and strategies across government departments, alongside responses to gender-based violence, to achieve a whole society approach.
Further, develop and implement comprehensive primary prevention strategies involving and across all sectors of society, including education, health care, the criminal justice system, transport industry, the third sector and corporate businesses.
Investment in Primary Prevention
Committing government investment and statutory sources of funding for specialist organisations working on primary prevention initiatives aimed at addressing the underlying factors contributing to violence against women, engaging with men and boys.
Importantly, to deliver any of this work, specialist primary prevention organisations like White Ribbon UK need to be funded to do so. The primary prevention of men’s violence against women is not an area that receives statutory funding to develop and deliver, yet it is the key to challenging and ending the harmful attitudes and behaviours that lead to gender-based violence.
Implementation of the Istanbul Convention: Chapter 3 – Prevention
Fully implement Chapter 3 of the Istanbul Convention, which focuses on prevention measures, especially by engaging men and boys, including through education programs, workplace programmes and training and other community based measures to challenge harmful gender stereotypes.
The Istanbul Convention provides a robust framework for preventing and combating gender-based violence, and its implementation is crucial in changing harmful cultures and stopping violence before it happens.
