25 November - White Ribbon Day 2020 - different but essential

A message from Anthea Sully, White Ribbon UK Chief Executive

Why we need to make this year’s White Ribbon Day stronger than ever

This White Ribbon Day, Wednesday 25 November, and the 16 days to end violence against women that follow, we are asking people in their communities, organisations and workplaces, to find new ways to say ‘no’ to violence against women, despite the restrictions imposed by COVID-19.

We are ambitious for White Ribbon Day this year.  We want to get the message out to all communities and into all schools. This is only going to be possible with your help and support. We want you to bring your commitment and creativity so that we can find ways that White Ribbon Day can take place in these unprecedented times.  We are able to reach thousands of people because of the actions of our supporters, partner organisations, ambassadors and champions who raise awareness, speak up in their communities and raise vital funds so that we can continue the work. Thank you for all you are doing, even when times are so difficult.

The need for our work is acute. Covid-19 has increased violence against women.  In June the National Domestic Abuse Helpline which ordinarily logs around 270 calls and contacts from women, friends and family members needing support every day, saw an increase of 77% during June 2020. And in the workplace over 35 percent of UK women have experienced at least one sexist workplace demand since the lockdown started in March, usually around online conference calls.

  • All our White Ribbon Day information and resources can be found here.

  • You can buy White Ribbons and awareness raising materials in our shop.

  • Find how to make a donation and ideas for fundraising here.

  • If you would like to order our downloadable schools pack please email info@whiteribbon.org.uk

  • We will soon be making announcements about the exciting webinars planned to take place between 25 November and 10 December.

Thank you for the continuing support you give White Ribbon UK. Together we can make a big difference in ending violence against women.

Best wishes

Anthea
