White Ribbon UK welcomes GREVIO's evaluation on the UK's implementation of the Istanbul Convention

White Ribbon UK welcomes the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO)’s recent baseline evaluation on the UK’s implementation of the Istanbul Convention. The Istanbul Convention sets minimum standards for governments to meet when tackling violence against women. The Convention is based on 4 key pillars, with the first concerning prevention.

GREVIO highlighted the importance of the primary prevention of men’s violence against women and girls, addressing harmful and restrictive attitudes and behaviours that lead to sexism, misogyny and violence.

We share GREVIO’s belief that this work must be supported through long-term and consistent funding, and their recommendation that all relevant authorities across the UK must increase their efforts to eradicate prejudice, harmful gender stereotypes and all forms of men’s violence against women and girls.

The UK Government must invest in and work with organisations like White Ribbon UK, who are engaging with individuals and organisations across England and Wales to make positive culture change in workplaces and communities. Only by investing in prevention can the Government achieve its target of halving men’s violence against women and girls in a decade.
